What is a Resting Metabolic Rate Test?

Resting metabolic rate (RMR) is the rate at which a person burns calories while at rest. Between 70 and 80% of all calories are burned under resting conditions. Knowledge of metabolic rate is vital to nutritional assessment, weight loss planning and care of various medical conditions.

Many factors affect a person’s metabolic rate: weight, age, body composition, hormone levels, and gender making it a highly unique number.

Why Test your Resting Metabolic Rate?

Understanding your body’s unique metabolic rate will allow our nutritionist to customize your weight loss or maintenance program around your needs.

(1) It can screen for a slowed metabolism that may explain frustrated attempts to lose weight in the past.

(2) It can reveal changes in your metabolism during the weight loss process that can help trouble shoot a frustrating plateau.

(3) Once you reach your goal, an RMR measurement can give you the precise caloric prescription for maintenance to help you sustain that goal weight.

(4) After patients reach their goal weight, their RMR most likely has dropped by as much as 25 k/cals for every pound lost?  That is why it is SO EASY to re-gain the weight!  Measuring RMR frequently after weight loss to set proper target maintenance goals is key to success.

How does the test work?

We use the same technology as ICU metabolic testing. Because every calorie a person consumes requires a fixed amount of oxygen to be converted to energy, our equipment measures the oxygen you consume to calculate calories burned.

Our equipment directly measures the concentration of oxygen a person breathes out. Each client merely breathes through a simple mouthpiece as all the exhaled air is collected and analyzed. Because there is a direct correlation between oxygen consumed and calories burned (4.813 calories for every milliliter of oxygen consumed), an accurate measurement of oxygen consumption is an effective measurement of calorie consumption.
